Cymatotheca N.I.Hendey, 1958

Holotype species: Cymatotheca weissflogii (Grunow) Hendey

Original publication and holotype designation: Hendey, N.I. (1958). Marine diatoms from some West African ports. Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, Series 3 77(1): 28-85, 6 pls.

Description: Cells solitary. Valve elliptic, slightly bent along the long axis, causing the surface of the valve to lie in 2 planes; valve face slightly undulate about long axis, one margin being turned up and the opposite margin turned down. Valve face punctate; on one side puncta are large and arranged in widely spaced radiating striae, on the other side puncta are finer and densely arranged, or less frequently, irregular or in irregular longitudinal lines. These dense puncta decrease in size as they approach the margin where they are interrupted by a narrow hyaline area, the hyaline area may bear a few isolated puncta at each end near the poles of the valve. The margin beyond the hyaline area bears coarse striae. In the middle of the hyaline area, opposite the center of the valve is either a single punctum or a group of 3 or 4 puncta, usually papillose. On the outer margin of the valve opposite the punctum is a thickening of the valve margin. This taxon is widely distributed along the coasts of West Africa, the Indomalayan region and the warmer regions of eastern North America. The paleoecology of C. weissflogii in Quaternary sediments from Japan is presented by Mori (1986).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
