Description: Ectoparasitic dinophyte feeding on crustacean eggs. Gymnodinium Stein-like dinospore attaches to the host, inserts a peduncle into the egg, and a strong holdfast organelle develops. Apparently by extracellular digestion, food uptake occurs resulting in a gradual increase of the parasite which lacks flagella. Palintomic cell division starts beneath the initial envelope of the trophont long before food uptake is complete. Chain of sporocysts forms. Spores liberated by rupture of the trophont envelope. Fate of dinospores unknown; apparently a postmaturation phase is needed before infection of a new host. Description here based on observations of Chatton and Chatton (1968) which differ slightly from the original description of Dogiel (1906). Ectoparasites of marine crustacean eggs (Copepods, Euphausiaceae) without chloroplasts. So far only recorded from the Mediterranean.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
