Pavillardia Kofoid & Swezy, 1920

Holotype species: Pavillardia tentaculifera Kofoid & Swezy

Currently accepted name for the type species: Gyrodinium postmaculatum Kofoid & Swezy

Original publication and holotype designation: Kofoid, C.A. (1920). A new morphological interpretation of the structure of Noctiluca, and its bearing on the status of the Cystoflagellata (Haeckel). University of California Publications in Zoology 19: 317-334.

Description: Unarmored, free-living dinoflagellate of medium size (60 _m) with stout ovate body. Cingulum slightly premedian, displaced by about one-third of the body length; sulcus extending from near the apex to antapex. Distinctive is a stout club-shaped tentacle directed posteriorly from the antapex. Typical dinokaryon located in the anterior part of the cell; no chloroplasts, cytoplasm a pale yellow. Amphiesma faintly striated. Originally classified in the Noctilucales due to its tentacle, it now seems closer to Gyrodinium. Some Cochlodinium species also have tentacles, and therefore, following Sournia (1986), are placed in the Gymnodiniaceae. Known only by its author, from plankton of the pacific coast of America.

Information kindly contributed by M. Elbrächter but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gyrodinium.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Gómez, F. & Artigas, L.F. (2023). Rediscovery of the dinoflagellate genus Pavillardia Kofoid & Swezy and its synonymy with Gyrodinium Kofoid & Swezy (Dinophyceae). South African Journal of Botany 162: 743-748.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
