Actinellipsoidion Ettl, 1977

Holotype species: Actinellipsoidion sol (Pascher) Ettl

Original publication and holotype designation: Ettl, H. (1977). Taxonomische Bemerkungen zu den Xanthophyceen. Nova Hedwigia 28: 555-568.

Description: Solitary, unicellular, free-living, non-motile organisms 7-12 µm diameter with bristles 12-13 µm long. Cells largely ellipsoidal in transverse view. Cell walls smooth, firm, brittle and sometimes slightly ornamented and silicified. Bristles with highly unequal dimensions are inserted in the equatorial region and radiating in a manner that they appear localized in the same plane. The longest bristles are in the form of a needle but the natural extremities are not seen because all are damaged; they appear to have a constant diameter and are not tapered. Chloroplasts numerous and parietal, discoid to cupuliform. Oil and lipid droplets present. Asexual reproduction unknown. Actinellipsoidion is a very rare soil alga reported only from coastal regions of Sicily. Based on the very short bristles and the incomplete descriptions of cell contents, we consider, like Silva, that Radiosphaera nemiahi Croasdale has little relationship with Actinellipsoidion. Thus A. sol is the only species retained in the genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
