Description: Thalli unicellular though sometimes gregarious, attached at apical end by mucilaginous pad, rarely with diminutive stipe. Cells mostly elliptic to ovate but one species slightly curved and two others spherical to subspherical. Cells 9-25 x 4-15 &m, with smooth cell walls, and with persistent contractile vauoles at anterior. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast mostly band-shaped and parietal, in C. stellata, stellate with numerous radiating lobes; pyrenoid in most species single or absent, in C. incrassata with multiple pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores 4-17 x 1.5-7 &m; 2-32 per sporangium. Sporangia often highly enlarged at maturity, to 80 &m long in one species, release by rupture of sporangial wall. Zoospores with stigma that may or may not persist after attachment. Aplanospores, 7-11 &m in several species. Sexual reproduction reported in few species, here isogamous with gametes to 8 &m long, with gametes similar to zoospores. Site of meiosis not described but presumably associated with zygote germination. Chlamydomonadopsis epiphytic or epizoic on variety of freshwater plankton; reported from Europe, North America and Asia mostly in temperate habitats. Species distinguished based on differences in cell size and form, and details of chloroplast morphology. Prior to description of genus, species variously assigned to Chlorangium, Characiochloris, Chlorophysema and Chlorangiospsis as defined by various authors. Ultrastructural studies required to resolve species relationships and affinities of genus within family. Iyengar distinguished Chlamydocystis from Chlamydomonadopsis based on the longitudinal division of the cell during spore formation, however, this has not been accepted by subsequent authors.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
