Original publication and holotype designation: Bourrelly, P. (1960). Un nouveau genre africain d'endocyanose: Glaucocystopsis africana nov. gen. et nov. sp. Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences, Paris, Série D 251: 416-418.

Description: Cells solitary or in 2-4-celled colonies, 24 x 16 µm, within the expanded, persistent mother cell wall. Cells ellipsoid to oval, 10-13 x 7-8 µm, the cell wall thin and homogeneous. Cells with starch granules and a starch-encased pyrenoid, usually central in position. Chloroplast lacking, cytoplasm with blue-green, irregular, ellipsoid or reniform cyanellae. Asexual reproduction by 2-4 autospores. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Glaucocystopsis is known only from the type locale in Africa (Ivory Coast). Unlike Glaucocystis Itzigsohn, cells of Glaucocystopsis possess a pyrenoid as well as cyanellae.
