Description: Cells solitary, tetrahedral to polyhedral with an outer, integument-like cell wall (?mucilage envelope) bearing ridge-like projections upon the margins. In median optical section the cells are asymmetrically pyramidal, one side being slightly longer than the others with the protoplast distantly removed from the cell wall. Cells usually 15-18 &m in diameter, seldom larger. Chloroplast single, parietal, with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by partitioning of parental protoplast into 4 tetrahedrally disposed daughter cell protoplasts each of which has a very large bowl-shaped chloroplast, 2 contractile vacuoles and usually a distinct stigma. Shortly after partitioning, a distinct mucilage envelope forms around each daughter cell protoplast. Mature daughter cells, each with the characteristically ridged outer integument, are released upon rupture of the mother cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Trigonidiella, known only from the type locality, a boggy marsh of very low pH in Czechoslovakia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
