Description: Solitary, fusiform cells, 37-64 x 150-216 m, not embedded in mucilaginous matrix. Cell walls smooth. Cells with single central nucleus; parietal chloroplasts numerous and discoid to lanceolate, each with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2-4 per sporangium and released by rupture of parental cell wall. Sexual reproduction homothallic and oogamous. Eggs spherical, to 100 µmdiameter, produced singly in oogonium; during maturation rupturing oogonial wall. Spermatia biflagellate with pointed apex; 16 or 32 sperm per antheridium. Gametangial production induced by transfer to fresh medium with high light conditions. Zygote spherical with thick cell wall; in old cultures becoming brick red.
