Hyalobrachion Swindell, 1939

Holotype species: Hyalobrachion omphalotus Swindell

Original publication and holotype designation: Swindell, N. (1939). A new saprophytic genus of the Volvocales. New Phytologist 38: 335-339.

Description: Unicellular thalli, in general, spindle-shaped with four arms arising from the anterior half of the cell and oriented normal to the long axis of the cell. The arms are cruciate in cross-section. Two isokont flagella inserted at the apex. Chloroplast absent and cell lacks photosynthetic pigment. Papillum absent and pyrenoids not observed. Starch grains have been noted. Stigma present. Nucleus centrally positioned. Contractile absent or present, depending on the species. When present, contractile vacuoles numerous and scattered throughout the cytoplasm. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis (sporangium is motile) resulting in four motile daughter cells. Resting stages, covered with a mucilage layer, have been observed. No sexual stages have been observed in this genus. Hyalobrachion is regarded as a colorless parallel to Brachiomonas. Hyalobrachion grows heterotrophically and has been found in eastern Europe and the United Kingdom. No ultrastructural, biochemical, or molecular data are available for this organism

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
