Description: Plants globose and lime-encrusted, consisting of entangled, uniseriate filaments bearing short whorls of branchlets. Cells cylindrical or barrel-shaped. Method of reproduction unknown. Only known from a fountain at Hebron in Israel. It has been suggested that this incompletely described and little-known taxon is a depauperate growth form of Draparnaldia.

Nomenclatural note
(Hansgirg 1889: 58). [As far as the position of the genus Crenacantha in the system of chlorophyll-green algae is concerned, it follows from the data given above that in its structure, branching, etc. it shows some resemblance to the genus Draparnaldia, but differs from it in its absence of hair formation and mucus secretion differs significantly. The close relationship of the two genera just mentioned, resp. the affiliation of the genus Crenacantha to the Chaetophoreae seems to me to be beyond any doubt, despite the differences mentioned above, which exist between the genus Crenacantha and the Chaetophoreen genus Draparnaldia, which is closest to it. Because of the incompleteness of our previous knowledge about the genus Crenacantha, this may be listed as a special genus in the system of algae next to the genus Draparnaldia, as long as we do not know the course of development, the type of reproduction.] - (26 June 2023) - M.D. Guiry

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
