Pocillomonas Steinecke, 1926

Holotype species: Pocillomonas flos-aquae Steinecke

Description: Ovoid to cylindrical flagellates with anterior depression, from which emerges a variable number of flagella, usually 6(5-9). Each cell contains a large number of disc-shaped or elongate plastids posteriorly. These were interpreted by Wavrik (1975) to be cyanelles. Numerous starch grains surround the centrally located nucleus. An elongate or round stigma lies in the anterior part of the cell or near the middle, or it is lacking. Pyrenoids are lacking. Two contractile vacuoles. Cell covered with thin layer of mucilage which contains numerous mucilaginous rods readily visible after drying or after staining with methyl violet. Rounded cysts are known (resting stages). Sexual reproduction unknown. Judged from the 2 reported finds (nutrient rich fresh water near Königsberg, East Prussia, now Kaliningrad, Russia, and in Austria) this poorly studied flagellate lives in very eutrophic stagnant or running fresh water.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
