Original publication and holotype designation: Hoppenrath, M. & Selina, M. (2006). Pseudothecadinium campbellii gen. nov. sp. nov. (Dinophyceae), a phototrophic, thecate, marine planktonic species found in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. Phycologia 45: 260-269.
Description: Thecate dinoflagellate with apical pore complex and descending cingulum. Cells laterally compressed. Asymmetrical epitheca and hypotheca, smaller epitheca. Incomplete precingular plate series beginning at the dorsal epitheca side. Plate formula Po 4' 2a 4" 4c, 5(?)s, 5'" 1"". Apical intercalary plates separated from each other and ventral intercalary plate with ventral pore. Only one antapical plate, lying on the right lateral side.
