Description: Thallus short (less than 1.1 mm) uniseriate to multiseriate 2 to 10 cells wide, clavate, usually unbranched and with a short stipe. Each cell has one greyish-ruby to cinnamon coloured multilobed plastid with a central pyrenoid. The plastid lacks a peripheral limiting thylakoid and the Golgi is associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Reproduction is only by archeospores when vegetative cells are released individually, in uniseriate and multiseriate filament sectors, or when the whole thallus gelatinises and releases a mass of free cells. Free spores are round (7-12 mm in diameter) and glide without substratum contact. The low molecular carbohydrates sorbitol, digeneaside and trehalose are present. Epiphytic on Spermothamnion cymosum.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
