Koshicola Shin Watanabe, K.Fucíková, & L.A.Lewis, 2016

Holotype species: Koshicola spirodelophila Shin Watanabe, Fucíková & L.A.Lewis

Original publication and holotype designation: Watanabe, S., Fucíková, K., Lewis, L.A. & Lewis, P.O. (2016). Hiding in plain sight: Koshicola spirodelophila gen. et sp. nov. (Chaetopeltidales, Chlorophyceae), a novel green alga associated with the aquatic angiosperm Spirodela polyrhiza. American Journal of Botany 103(5): 1-11, 5 figs.

Description: Thalli are unicellular, or forming sarcinoid or isobilateral tetrads, or short uniseriate, unbranched, and branched fi laments. Actively growing cells contain a large distinct vacuole, and no contractile vacuoles. Cells are uninucleate. The chloroplast is parietal-to-hollow spherical with a prominent pyrenoid surrounded by starch segments. The pyrenoid matrix is penetrated by a cytoplasmic channel, which contains the nucleus. Cell walls between newly formed adjacent cells are without plasmodesmata. Asexual reproduction occurs by dissociation of fi lamentous cells, and formation of autospores and quadriflagellate zoospores without a rigid cell wall.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
