Original publication and holotype designation: Bustamante, D.E., Won, B.Y., Miller, K.A. & Cho, T.O. (2017). Wilsonosiphonia gen. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) based on molecular and morpho-anatomical characters. Journal of Phycology 53(2): 368–380, 7 figs.

Description: Plants 0.7–3.2 cm, forming predominantly epilithic, intertidal turfs. Thalli composed of extensive and entangled creeping, interwoven, indeterminate prostrate, and erect axes. Ecorticate axes sparsely to moderately dichotomously to subdichotomously branched. Adventitious branches present. Lateral branches replacing trichoblasts. Trichoblasts, if present, long, numerous, delicate, several times forked, deciduous. Conspicuous scar cells present. Rhizoids cut off from distal ends of mature pericentral cells, with taproot-shaped multicellular tips at maturity. Pericentral cells eight to 14 produced from each axial cell. Procarps composed of a supporting cell bearing a four-celled carpogonial branch. Spermatangia replacing or developing as branches of trichoblasts. Tetrasporangia tetrahedral and arranged in spiral series. One or two tetrasporangia produced from a single segment.
