Paludicola Necchi & M.L.Vis, 2020

Holotype species: Paludicola turfosa (Bory) M.L.Vis & Necchi

Original publication and holotype designation: Vis, M.L., Lee, J., Eloranta, P., Chapuis, I.S., Lam, D.W. & Necchi, O. (2020). Paludicola gen.nov. and revision of the species formerly in Batrachospermum section Turfosa (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta). Journal of Phycology 56(4): 844-861, 6 figures, 1 table.

Description: Plants monoecious, dioecious, or polyoecious (a population with both monoecious and dioecious plants); branching pseudodichotomous, (at least two species are exceptions and irregular); whorls well developed or reduced; cortication of the main thallus axis composed of two or three layers of filaments with cylindrical cells detached from the main axis or loosely arranged; primary fascicles composed of cylindrical to ellipsoidal, obovoid, or spherical cells with (2–)3–15(– 17) cell storeys; secondary fascicles abundant and covering half to all of the internode; spermatangia spherical or obovoid, on primary or secondary fascicles in some species predominantly on secondary fascicles; carpogonial branches well differentiated from the fascicles, straight, developing from the periaxial or proximal cells of primary fascicles, rarely on cortical filaments, short, composed of 1–11 barrel- or disc-shaped cells, 12–60(–75) µm in length; involucral filaments composed of 1–5 barrelshaped or spherical cells; carpogonia 23–69 µm in length, with sessile, club-shaped trichogynes; carposporophytes axial, hemispherical to obovoidal, higher or lower than the whorls, 1–2 per whorl, large, 90–550 µm diameter, 60–330 µm in height; gonimoblast filaments of two types: radially branched, densely or loosely arranged, determinate with 2–14 ellipsoidal, cylindrical, or barrel-shaped cells and diffuse, indeterminate with cylindrical cells, prostrate, creeping around fascicles and on cortical filaments; carposporangia obovoid, subspherical, 8–25 µm in length, 7–16.5 µm diameter.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
