Description: Colonies without mucilage envelope, comprised of 2-16 biflagellate cells without cellulosic cell walls. Cells ovoid and radially arranged, with their narrow posterior ends at the center, their broadly rounded anterior ends at periphery. Chloroplasts single, principally cup-shaped, with basal pyrenoid. Stigma filiform and located in anterior of cell. Contractile vacuoles apparently lacking. Asexual reproduction by longitudinal, binary cell division which increases the number of cells in the colony. Individual cells may be released from colony and, by subsequent division, give rise to a new colony. Sexual reproduction isogamous. The quadriflagellate planozygote does not enter a resting phase (as is typical of motile, colonial chlorophytes), but gives rise directly to daughter colony. Site of meiosis in life history unclear.
