Biddulphiella P.A.Sims & M.P.Ashworth, 2022

Holotype species: Biddulphiella tridens (Ehrenberg) P.A.Sims & M.P.Ashworth

Original publication and holotype designation: Sims, P.A., Ashworth, M.P., Theriot, E.C. & Manning, S.R. (2022 '2023'). Molecular and morphological analysis of Biddulphia sensu lato: a new diagnosis of Biddulphia, with a description of the new genera Biddulphiella and Neobrightwellia. Marine Micropaleontology 178(102186): 1-21, 21 figs.

Description: The valves of taxa in this genus tend to be narrow and bipolar, with pseudocelli present on relatively tall elevations at valve apices. Valves undulate in valve and girdle views. A continuous to semi-continuous marginal ridge is present at the interface of the valve mantle and valve face; ridge is always present at valve depressions. Porose areolae, occluded by cribra, are present on the valve face and elevations, but sparse or absent on valve depressions, including the marginal ridge and mantle flanking the depressions. Areolae typically bordered by a thick rim. These hyaline depressions in the valve face can give the impression of costae but are in fact transverse sulci—thickened hyaline folds. Interstitial pores, smaller and without rims, present on the valve, scattered between areolae. Rimoportulae usually present on the central elevation, with long hollow external tubes and a slit across a hemispherical papillus internally. Additional spines, spinules or granules present between areolae in some taxa. The mantle edge posseses a flange, except for areas corresponding to the valve depressions, leading to the appearance of several "pits" in the mantle. Several taxa in this genus lack flange entirely, however. Copulae open, with porose areolae.

Origin of description: this description is from the original publication; it may have been modified slightly. The most recent alteration to this page was made on 2023-01-31 by M.D. Guiry.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Comments: Taxa in this genus present in the late Cretaceous to present day, with extant forms found in subtropical to tropical coastal habitats. When observed, cells in colonies are joined by both pseudocelli.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
