Molecular and morphological analysis of Biddulphia sensu lato: a new diagnosis of Biddulphia, with a description of the new genera Biddulphiella and Neobrightwellia. Description: Valves can range from bipolar to multipolar, but typically triangular. Valves with a central elevation as well as pseudocelli present on elevations at apices. Porose areolae occluded by cribra present across valve and girdle elements; even pseudocelli occluded. Interstitial pores sparse, if present. Pseudosepta present at valve apices, and costae present in some species. Rimoportulae, when present, are located sub-marginally around the central elevation. Externally, the rimoportulae present as rimmed pores, leading to a stalked semi-circular slit-bearing structure internally. Mantle is straight with a hyaline edge. Copulae open. When observed, cells in colonies joined by a single pseudocellus. Numerous plastids per cell.
