Boreolithothamnion P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña, 2023

Holotype species: Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña

Original publication and holotype designation: Gabrielson, P.W., Maneveldt, G.W., Hughey, J.R. & Peña, V. (2023). Taxonomic contributions to Hapalidales (Corallinophycidae, Rhodophyta): Boreolithothamnion gen. nov., Lithothamnion redefined and with three new species and Roseolithon with new combinations. Journal of Phycology 59: 751-774.

Description: Plants non-geniculate, entirely pseu-doparenchymatous; encrusting to warty, lumpy, fruticose and/or foliose; epilithic, epizoic and/or epiphytic, or growing unattached as free-living rhodoliths. Thallus dorsiventral in encrusting portions, more or less ra-dial in branches/protuberances; thallus construction monomerous and plumose (non-coaxial), single system of branched, laterally coherent filaments that form ventral medullary region (oriented more or less parallel to the substrate) where filaments curve both upwards and downward; downward curving filaments often terminate in elongate initials; upward curving filaments comprise a peripheral cortical region (ori-ented more or less perpendicular to the substrate) that terminate at thallus surface in one or more epi-thallial cell layers; haustoria unknown; epithallial cells flared; subepithallial initials (intercalary meristematic cells) usually as long as or longer than their immediate inward derivatives. Cells of adjacent filaments joined by fusions; secondary pit-connections absent. Trichocytes unknown. Gametangial plants presum-ably apparently dioecious. Spermatangia branched on male conceptacle floor, unbranched and arcuate on walls and roof. Female (carpogonial) conceptacles raised, conical with chambers flask-shaped. Female conceptacles with carpogonial branches across conceptacle floor; carpogonial branches two-celled, borne on supporting cells; each hypogenous cell bearing one or two carpogonia. After presumed fertilization two-celled gonimoblast filaments borne discontinuously among senescent carpogonia across carposporangial conceptacle floor. Carposporangial conceptacle chambers elliptical, canal surrounded by papillae. Tetra/bisporangial plants with multipo-rate conceptacles. Tetra/bisporangial conceptacle roof formation from vegetative filaments both peripheral to and interspersed among developing tetra/bisporangial initials. Lowermost cells of vegetative filaments elongate; some degenerate to form conceptacle chamber; uppermost cells form the conceptacle roof. Tetra/bisporangia zonately divided. Apical plugs block roof pores before spore release.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
