Dermocorynus P.Crouan & H.Crouan, 1858
Holotype species: Dermocorynus montagnei P.Crouan & H.Crouan
Original publication and holotype designation: Crouan, P.L. & Crouan, H.M. (1858). Note sur quelques algues marines nouvelles de la rade de Brest. Annales des Sciences Naturelles, Botanique, Quatrième série 9: 69-75, pl. 3.
Description: Horizontally expanded crust of mostly unbranched filaments of nearly isodiametric cells. Outer covering mucilaginous. Rhizoids and secondary pit connections lacking. Hairs apparently absent. Monoecious. Reproductive structures in minute erect, simple or bifurcate, cylindrical to compressed papillae with a filamentous medulla of elongate and stellate cells and a cortex of inner stellate cells and elliptical cells only slightly smaller toward cuticle. Secondary pit connections present. Ampullae with one to four orders of branches. Carpogonial branch 2-celled, on primary ampullar filament; hypogynous cell with sterile lateral. Auxiliary cell intercalary in primary or basal in secondary filament, in separate ampulla. Fertilized carpogonium and hypogynous cell issuing connecting filaments. Single outwardly directed gonimoblast initial cut off auxiliary cell after contact by connecting filament, producing numerous gonimoblast filaments. Auxiliary fusion cell formed. Pericarp developing from auxiliary cell. Carpostome present or absent. Spermatangia cut off by oblique walls. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia small to medium, cruciate or irregular, attached subbasally in intermediate cortical layer, occurring in a slightly protruding, gelatinous sorus in type species. Spore germination: protuberance leaving behind empty spore, developing into disc.

Verification of Data
Users are responsible for verifying the accuracy of information before use, as noted on the website Content page.
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
