Description: Filamentous; solitary filaments or small groups of trichomes. trichomes with a limited growth, usually short (with up to 16 cells/trichome), 0.5-7 _m wide, uniseriate, unbranched, more or less straight or slightly curved, isopolar, not attenuated to the ends, mainly constricted, rarely unconstricted at the crosswalls. Sheaths lacking, sometimes (facultatively) with fine mucilage enveloping trichomes. All cells morphologically and functionally identical, isodiametric or slightly shorter or longer than wide, cylindrical to barrel-shaped, end cells widely rounded; thylakoids probably concentrically arranged along the cell walls. Heterocytes and akinetes missing. Reproduction by transverse cell division, all cells capable of division. Trichomes divide between vegetative cells without cell death, after they reach a distinct length (usually only with several cells). Trichome fragments nonmotile (hormocytes), isopolar, germinate at both ends. The different species occur in periphyton and metaphyton of clear, mainly small freshwater bodies with aquatic plants (3 species), epiphytically (endogloeic) in the mucilage of other freshwater algae (1), benthic in lakes (1) or aerophytic on calcareous substrates (2). Known mainly from Europe. Type species probably has cosmopolitan distribution, but not common.
