Taxonomic notes
"This beautiful plant, of which the fruit is at present unknown to me, seems to be the type of a new genus of Cryptonemiaceae, which I inscribe in honour of Mrs. Gulson of Exmouth, whose explorations of the shells and Algae of the Devonshire coast are well known to and appreciated by British naturalists." (Harvey 1855). - (12 Mar 2011) - M.D. Guiry

Description: Thallus to 30 cm, irregularly branched, mucilaginous, axes terete each cell with a whorl of 4 determinate branchlets appearing as nodal bands, corticated below with rhizoidal filaments. Lateral branches borne from outer end of basal cells of determinate branchlets. Pyriform gland cells on cells of determinate branchlets. Procarps on fertile branches along axes each with several 4-celled carpogonial branches of which one matures. Auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, gives rise to carposporophyte with successive rounded groups of carposporangia surrounded by loose involucre of filaments from axial cells below. Spermatangia on terminal cells of determinate branchlets. Tetrasporangia sessile on central cells of determinate branchlets, tetrahedrally divided.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
