Description: Parasitic thalli, fertile erect filaments arising from a pulvinate outgrowth on host, outgrowth including host tissue and internal parasite filaments; upright polysiphonous filaments mostly missing. Erect filaments monosiphonous, simple or with 1-2 branches, each terminating in a reproductive structure. Tetrasporangial stichidia with more than 3 sporangia in each segment; with 5-8 pericentral cells, each of which may be fertile or 1- several may remain sterile in a segment; stichidia with curved distal ends. Cystocarps spheroid to ovoid, on monosiphonous stalks or, in C. velutina and C. lophurellae, becoming polysiphonous in post-fertilization stages. Male capitula spheroid to ovoid, terminating unseriate filaments arising from pulvinate outgrowth.
