Description: Thallus erect or decumbent, sparingly to profusely branched (many species villose); growth sympodial. Branching radial or secondarily bilateral; axes terete or flattened, with 4 or 5 pericentral cells cut off in a circular sequence, each segment bearing a persistent pseudolateral; axes corticated or not. Adventitious monosiphonous filaments present or absent, formed on pericentral cells, cortical cells and/or pseudolaterals. Spermatangial branchlets transforming from pseudolaterals. Carpogonial branches formed on third pericentral cell (of 5) of fertile segment. Cystocarp usually with an elongate ostiolate pericarp. Tetrasporangia in stichidia, tetrahedrally divided, 4–6 per segment; post-sporangial cover cells forming from fertile pericentral cell.
