Original publication and holotype designation: Itono, H. & Tanaka, T. (1973). Balliella, a new genus of Ceramiaceae (Rhodophyta). Botanical Magazine, Tokyo 86: 241-252, 23 figs.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Thallus filamentous, corticated or not, erect or with prostrate and erect axes. Axial cells each with 2 opposite distichous whorl branches, one remaining determinate, the other longer and potentially indeterminate; long whorl branches borne either regularly on every second axial cell or irregularly at intervals of 2–5 cells; corticating filaments arising from basal cells of lateral branches. Vesicular cells spherical, abaxial and/or adaxial, on the lowest cell of whorl branches, occasionally on more distal cells. Spermatangia in dense rounded to cylindrical heads borne adaxially on cells of lateral branches. Carpogonial branches 4-celled, abaxial on basal cells of whorl branches, curving around the supporting cell. Auxiliary cell arising from the adaxial surface of the supporting cell. Carposporophytes developing from auxiliary cell, with 4–6 generally spherical gonimolobes composed entirely of carposporangia. Tetrasporangia solitary or clustered on basal cells of lateral branches, or on short branches arising from them, cruciately divided.
