Description: Plants are firmly cartilaginous, uncalcified crusts reaching as much as 40 cm in breadth and consisting of a relatively thick central region of more or less parallel, interwoven and anastomosing filaments that give rise dorsally and ventrally to deep cortical palisades of moniliform cells. The ventral surfaces adhere strongly to rocks but do not produce anchoring rhizoids. Tetrasporangia form in dorsal nemathecia, where they terminate erect filaments among lax and lengthy paraphyses. Abbott and Hollenberg (1976) ascribe both cruciate and tetrahedral division patterns to the sporangia, the latter being unique in the Gigartinales. Sexual reproduction is unknown. Denizot (1968) regards the family placement of Coriophyllum as problematic, although Abbott and Hollenberg (1976) place it in the Peyssonneliaceae.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
