Description: Thallus erect, occasionally decumbent, filamentous, often mucilaginous, ecorticate or with rhizoidal cortication in the lower parts. Axes monosiphonous, with indeterminate axes bearing short determinate lateral branches (whorl branches) in whorls of 3. Indeterminate branches arising from the basal cells of whorl branches or from the distal ends of axial cells. Whorl branches dichotomously to tetrachotomously branched. Spermatangia on terminal cells of fertile whorl branches. Procarps arising from axial cells near the apex, in place of a whorl branch, consisting of a periaxial supporting cell bearing a 4-celled carpogonial branch. Post-fertilisation auxiliary cell with 1–3 sequentially maturing gonimolobes. Mature carposporophytes in swollen tips of thallus branches, surrounded by whorl branches.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
