Holotype species: Rhodospora sordida Geitler

Original publication and holotype designation: Geitler, L. (1927). Rhodospora sordida, nov. gen. et n. sp., eine neue "Bangiacee" des Süsswassers. Ă–sterreichische Botanisches Zeitschrift 76: 25-28.

Description: Unicells ca. 18 µm diam., sometimes united into irregular colonies within gelatinous matrix which may be layered. Each cell with several parietal, discoid, red-violet to olive-green to yellow chloroplasts. Nucleus central, floridean starch abundant. Reproduction by cell division and formation of 4-32 autospores. Sexual reproduction unknown.
