Description: Plants mostly epiphytic, attached by a small disk or with rhizoids penetrating the host tissue. Thalli membranous, saccate, cylindrical to flattened, entire or with frayed divisions, with short stipe, polystichous, composed of inner layer consisting of large, thick-walled, almost colorless cells and cortical layer consisting of smaller pigmented cells which contain several disc-shaped chloroplasts with pyrenoids. Unilocular sporangia formed within the cortical layer, scattered over the entire surface of the thallus except for the lowermost part. Plurilocular sporangia not detected on erect thallus (excluding C. californica). Unispores pear-shaped typically flagellated, containing a chloroplast with stigma. Wynne (1972) cultured unispores of C. californica and obtained microthalli forming plurilocular sporangia. The plurispores developed into plethysmothalli forming unilocular sporangia, however, macroscopic plant did not develop. On the other hand, unispores of C. bulligera and C. fucicola directly formed macrothalli.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
