Description: Plants solitary, to 40 cm in height. Holdfast grooved conical merging into a short stipe portion, the whole to 2cm long. Some specimens flattened to foliose with lower regions of branches constricted into irregular segments, subterete proximally; in upper portions of plant foliose throughout with frond width commonly 7(-15)mm. Other specimens subterete to slightly compressed, lacking obvious constrictions, with axis diameter 3-4mm. 3-4 orders of non-determinate branches produced in one plane. Branches arising distichously, in an irregularly alternate (seldom opposite) fashion. In foliose plants branches borne in the axils of subtending flattened pointed upward-curving projections. Growth apparently sympodial with foliose projections generally alternate, subtending the reproductive shoot. Faint midrib obvious in foliose axes. Receptacles produced singly, alternately (seldom oppositely) laterally throughout the thallus on a ca. 1mm long stipe (subtended by foliose projections in some plants). Receptacles, flattened, pointed oval to almost circular, 4-7 mm long. Conceptacles bisexual producing 1 egg per oogonium, and antheridia on branched stalks.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
