Description: Valves elliptic-lanceolate (naviculoid) with obtuse or produced ends. Axial area linear, narrow or widened in the middle; suborbicular to elliptical central area large. Striae chambered; each chamber (alveolus) with an outer wall containing 3-4 rows of small round poroids; inner wall absent; side walls of the alveoli not perforated.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Comments: Species of the genus resemble Navicula in valvar outline and Pinnularia in presence of alveoloid striae. Krammer & Lange-Bertalot (1986) retain the type species in Navicula, but later authors recognise the genus.
