The type species (lectotype) of the genus Grateloupia is Grateloupia filicina (J.V.Lamouroux) C.Agardh.

Type information
Type locality: "Sullivan's Island, Charleston, South Carolina, ... (v. v.)" [v.v. = seen living] (Harvey 1853: 26). Type: Prof. Lewis R. Gibbes & Harvey; January 1850; on the breakwater. TCD 0011818 (Rodríguez-Prieto & al. 2021: 85, fig. 2). Notes: "Lectotype: collected by Lewis R. Gibbs and William Henry Harvey in January, 1850, and deposited at ["Trinity College "London" - actually Dublin] (TCD0011818). The lectotype was selected by Reid Wiseman in December 1966" [but has not been formally designated in a sublication?]; "Isotypes: Isotype material can be found in several herbaria, e.g. MEL685640, BM530482" (Rodríguez-Prieto et al., 2021: 85, fig. 2).

Eponomy
Named for Lewis R. Gibbes, an American collector.
