Syntype localities: "Hab. in mari Indiae occidentalis ad Insulam St. Crucis (Rafn.!) in sunu Mexicano (Hb. Crouan!) [St Croix and Gulf of Mexico] (Agardh 1852: 598). Lectotype: LD Herb. alg. Agardh 29322 ("Rafinesque collection") (Gurgel & al. 2018: 10).

Adjective A (Latin), caudate, i.e., ending with a tail-like appendage (Stearn 1985).
