The type species (holotype) of the genus Stictyosiphon is Stictyosiphon adriaticus Kützing.

Type locality: Jamaica: St.-Thomas Parish: Cow Bay; (Taylor 1974: 66) Holotype: V.G. Gaut, o. A-6 363; 10 May 1970; "at a depth of about 4.5 meter on a muddy slope"; IJ; (Taylor 1974: 66) Notes: "Material of the type collection is deposited in the herbarium of the Science Museum, Kingston, Jamaica, and at the University of Michigan." The material in MICH was designated the "isotypi" in the Latin diagnosis. The Science Museum in Kingston is now the Natural History Museum of Jamaica (NHMJ).
