The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Antithamnionella spirographidis (Schiffner) E.M.Wollaston

Type locality: Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., California, U.S.A. (Gardner 1927: 412). Holotype: N.L. Gardner; Growing on Cystoseira osmundacea, cast ashore.. UC 266339 (Athanasiadis 1996: 412).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), beautiful and little (Stearn 1973).
