Distributional note
Wollaston (1968) suggested that this species was introduced into Australia by shipping, citing European waters as a possible source; however, Lindstrom & Gabrielson (1989) considered that the North Pacific was a more likely origin. The European populations may also have been introduced from this source (Maggs & Hommersand, 1993: 19). According to Womersley (1998) this species is widespread on N Pacific and Australian coasts. This species is further considered to have been introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 129), probably by shipping, being first found at Trieste, Italy prior to 1882; it is now widespread, particularly in the western Mediterranean. - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
