Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: "Nouv. Holl." (Esperance, Western Australia) (Silva & al. 1996: 821). Type: Labillardiere; CN (Womersley 1984: 266). Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting C.Agardh (1823 [1822-1823]: 443) and Womersley (1956: 367) for more information on the type locality of this species.
