Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 841). Notes: According to Womersley (1984: 268) the type was collected from Kent I., Bass Strait, by R. Brown and is located in BM.
