This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhodochorton purpureum (Lightfoot) Rosenvinge
Type locality: Germany: Duchy of Oldenburg: near Eckwarden ["Littore maris septentrionalis"] (Index Nominum Algarum).

Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1985).
