Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia stricta (Mertens ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Greek), urceolate; like a small jug or pitcher.
