Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Chondria is Chondria tenuissima (Withering) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acanthophora muscoides (Linnaeus) Bory

Type information
Type locality: Brazil (de Jong, Hitipeuw & Prud'Homme van Reine 1999: 133). Neotype: LD 94/068.9765 (nº38011) (de Jong, Hitipeuw & Prud'Homme van Reine 1999: 131). Notes: Agardh's specimen, Chondria muscoides from Brazil, inscribed "Chondria muscoides Ag. ad oras Brasiliam & ex. mus. Paris dedit Desfontaines", deposited in small fragments at the herbarium of Lund is proposed as neotype by de Jong et al. (1999).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling a moss (Neal 1993).

No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.

Taxonomic notes
= Acanthophora muscoides. Specimen no. 38011 chosen as neotype (LD 94068.9765) by de Jong et al. (1999). In the opinion of Perrone et al. (2006), this belongs to Acanthophora spicifera and the specimen numbered 38012, on the same sheet, belongs to A. ramulosa.
