The type species (holotype) of the genus Trentepohlia is Trentepohlia aurea (Linnaeus) C.Martius.

Holotype locality: Fort Diamant, area of Rémire-Montjoly, French Guiana (Rindi & López-Bautista 2007: 699). Holotype: F. Rindi; 25 June 2006; bamboo reeds facing sea, 10-15 m from shoreline. US (Rindi & López-Bautista 2007: 699). Notes: Isotypes: GALW and PC.

General environment
This is a terrestrial species.

Crustose alga, producing a thin orange layer. Thallus heterotrichous. Prostrate part spreading, pseudoparenchymatous, 10 -50 microns thick, consisting of several layers of cells. Erect filaments arising from the prostrate parts, 50-200 microns tall. Cells of the prostrate part elliptic or globular, 7-10 microns wide; cells of the erect filaments cylindrical, 3.5- 6 microns wide. Zoosporangia globular, 10-15 microns wide, produced at the apex of shorter erect filaments. Gametangia globular, 10-12 microns wide, lateral or apical on erect filaments.
