Published in: Rabenhorst, L. (1868). Flora europaea algarum aquae dulcis et submarinae. Sectio III. Algae chlorophyllophyceas, melanophyceas et rhodophyceas complectens. pp. i-xx, 1-461, 51 figs. Lipsiae [Leipzig]: Apud Eduardum Kummerum.
Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), crenulate, having small rounded teeth (Stearn 1973).
Note: Docidium crenulatum Ralfs (1848: 219), the earliest supposed, post-starting point date, basionym is a nomen nudum; and in any case Ralfs says 'Professor Bailey informs me that this plant is identical with Docidium nodulosum' and it cannot thus serve a basionym on two counts. The binomial should thus be ascribed solely to Rabenhorst. - (26 Feb 2010) - M.D. Guiry
