Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), eastern.
Thallus bushy, dark red to brown, gelatinous to cartilaginous in texture, arising from a discoid holdfast to up to 16 cm high, the branches terete to slightly compressed; main axes, 2-3 mm by 0.7-1.5 mm in diameter, bearing oppositely or alternately arranged pinnate branchlets, which often bear irregularly pinnate branchlets, 8-20 mm in length and 0.3-1.5 by 0.2-0.3 mm in diameter. Cortex composed of five to six layers of outer moniliform cells and one to two layers of polygonal- to stellate-shape inner cells; medullary filaments widely spaced, the medulla hollow in the center when young, but wih the filaments densely interwoven in old branches.Gametophytes and tetrasporophytes isomorphic, the gametophytes dioecious with the reproductive structures scattered over the entire thallus except the basal parts. Tetrasporangia initiated from inner corteical cells, cruciately divided when mature, 35-38 microns long by 12-14 microns wide. Spermatangial mother cells transformed from surface cells and dividing either obliquely or transversely and cutting off spermatangia terminally. Carpogonial and auxiliary cell branches formed in separate ampullae initiated from basal or subbasal inner cortical cells. Auxiliary cell ampullae abundant, composed of two unbranched filaments, the auxiliary cell being the basal cell of the second-order ampullar filament,which is cut off from the first cell of the first-order ampullar filament. After diploidization, the cells of auxiliary cell ampullar filaments branching one to two times laterally and flanking the young gonimolobes, later incorporated into a basal fusion cell. Inner cortical cells in the vicinity of the developing gonimoblasts producing secondary medullary filaments, which function as a pericarp.
