The type species (holotype) of the genus Botryocladia is Gastroclonium uvarium (J.A.Murray) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Irvinea ardreana (J.Brodie & Guiry) Guiry.

Type Information
Type locality: Sines, Portugal (37°58'N, 8°52’W); (Brodie & Guiry 1988: 112) Holotype: M.D. Guiry & J.A. West; 27 January 1977; type from culture (MDG no. 62) isolated from vegetative fragments collected in the intertidal; GALW; 000154 (Brodie & Guiry 1988: 112) Notes: Type is female plant (Fig. 1 of original publication) dried on a single herbarium sheet with isotype male and tetrasporangial plants (figs 2, 3), all in GALW.
