This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

Syntype localities: Cromer in Norfolk and Hastings in East Sussex, England; (Dillwyn 1809: 69) Type: NMW; (Ricker 1987) Notes: Womersley (1987) cites the herbarium as BM-K.
