Nomenclatural note
The data for this species (table 1 in Banaszak et al., 1993) are very confusing. S. californicum sp. nov. is cited with the reference Trench & Blank 1987 [!?]. There does not appear to be any mention of this species in Trench & Blank 1987. Symbiodinium californicum (#383, Banaszek et al. 1993) is cited in McBride et al. (2009). This species is not included in INA. The name is in any event invalid as there is no description, no type and the genus was invalid at this tiime. The epithet should be either "california", a noun, or "californicum" an adjective. - (29 August 2012) - G.M. Guiry
