Taxonomic note
Kraft (2009: 195), while raising D. bartayresiana var. plectens to the status of species, notes that De Clerck (pers. comm.) has foreshadowed that additional molecular work (unpubl.) indicating an even closer and possibly conspecific relationship between D. ciliolata and D. plectens may result in their merger. See fig. 4 in De Clerck et al., 2006. "Future research, using less conservative markers. could yet indicate that both Dictyota menstrualis and D. plectens are ...distinct lineages warranting species status but if that should prove the case, it is likely that D. ciliolata proper will have to be subdivided into a large number of other cryptic and pseudocryptic species." (Tronholm et al. 2013: 180). - (05 April 2013) - G.M. Guiry
