The type species (lectotype) of the genus Grateloupia is Grateloupia filicina (J.V.Lamouroux) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Port Philip, Victoria (Silva & al. 1996: 293). Holotype: Mueller; MEL 501415 (Edyvane & Womersley 1994: 287).
